Daily aspirin use lowers cancer mortality per new research

A study published August 10, 2012, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute confirms the association of daily aspirin use with reduced cancer mortality risks but indicates the risk reduction is smaller than previously determined in other studies. The research was reviewed at the Eureka Alert web site the same day.

Eric J. Jacobs, Ph.D., of the Epidemiology Research Program at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta, and colleagues looked at data on 100,139 men and women from the Cancer Prevention Study II Nutrition Cohort who had no prior history of cancer and had been taking a daily dose of aspirin. The participants responded about daily aspirin use by questionnaire.

The study found that daily aspirin use was associated with a 15% lower cancer risk.

This value is 16% less than the 37% reduction n cancer risk reported in previous studies.

The differences were in lengths of time of the study. A five year study produced a 37% cancer risk reduction and a ten year study produced a 15% cancer risk reduction. All the studies were independent of the onset of aspirin consumption provide a daily intake was maintained.

The object of the exercise is a safe, effective, low cost cancer prevention technique.

Alabama has one of the highest rates of cancer (all types of cancer) in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control. Recent reports from the American Cancer Society indicate Alabama has made minimal changes in laws that could help prevent cancer.

A bottle of 400 aspirin costs around $4. Treatment for a major cancer can cost tens of thousands in copays and rehab bills depending on your insurance.

An aspirin of prevention is worth thousands in medical bills.

No one should begin an aspirin regimen without consulting their physician.
