Of course, being able to wash a wooden deck is not space science. But without any precaution, the detergent can cause more damage than you can imagine.
The truth of the matter is that high pressure washers were never intended for use on wood surfaces. These high pressure machines are really designed for hard surfaces, so the operator must be very careful when using them on a platform. I know the guy from the rental company or the local business salesman said it’s very easy to clean a patio, but in reality it’s a lot easier to become a “wood digger” then I think maybe. I know what I’m talking about after trying to fix the performance of many DIY enthusiasts over the years. Therefore, you accept this warning so you do not have to rent a floor grinder next weekend to remove traces of your cleaning efforts. You connect a 3/4 inch water hose to your machine. Now connect the high pressure hose to the spray rod. Turn on the water at this point. When you start many gas-powered machines, it may be easier for you to start if you pull the trigger until water flows through your machine. Take a few minutes and make sure spraying does not damage plants or outdoor furniture, etc. To avoid damage with the cleaning solution, simply cover with waterproof tarpaulins at this time. Just remember, all that water and cleaning solution has to go somewhere. You don’t want to go out the next morning to find colored plants or siding.
The secret behind cleaning decks is to let your cleaning solution do most of the work. Away from the platform, preferably on a driveway or on a hard surface, use your machine to get used to the power. Open the spray head with a wide or “fan” spray pattern, as this is what 99% of your time uses. You will use the “fan” spray to rinse your cleaning solution. Even in this position, the spray removes embedded dirt with little effort.
There are literally dozens of roof cleaners on the market today. Some are simple cleaners, while others contain bleach and specific chemicals that react with certain types of wood. I would strongly suggest not using household bleach. Continue with commercial roof cleaning products to minimize the danger of the surrounding areas and plantations. Many of the largest roof spot manufacturers have their own roof cleaning products. Whichever product you choose, read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. You will find that most instructions do not include instructions or suggestions for using a high pressure cleaner. They are very aware of the dangers I mentioned earlier.
I have been using high pressure cleaners to run washing platforms for decades. They are more effective when used properly. If you need a high-pressure cleaner, remember that the job of the machine is to remove detergents and dirt. The added benefit is that the high pressure cleaner uses less water than a simple hose and nozzle. The first step is simply flushing the entire platform with low pressure water. After doing this, I mix the detergent in a 5 gallon bucket and use the high pressure cleaner to spray the platform with the chemical. I use an old broom or commercial cover brush to further spread the cleanser around the surfaces to be cleaned. You don’t really need to scrub, just extend the detergent at this point. Follow the instructions and allow the detergent to settle or remain on the surface for the specified time. Do not allow the solution to dry in one section of the platform while scrubbing another. This reduces the effect of the detergent. On very dirty covers, you can even spray another application of the cleaning solution and scrub the surface again.
