Raising Bookworms In The Digital Age

The world is divided largely into 2 types of people- readers and non-readers. Some of us would be found reading books all the time, while some would hold on to a book for years and yet not finish it.

Books are treasures, storytellers and friends. They give us an understanding of the world around us, share secrets to succeed and make sure we always have company even in the loneliest of places. There are 1000 good reasons why the habit of reading is a good one to cultivate. However, in the world of Youtube, Netflix and more, that can be very hard to do.

So here are some tips that can make the journey a bit simpler:

1. Start early:

A lot of happy memories around books in early childhood go a long way in developing the love of books. At a young age, buy books with lots of colorful pictures and check what stories your child likes. Read them out with a lot of over the top drama and lots of laughter.

2. Bring books according to age:

Sometimes we assume that children would enjoy the books that we did. Sadly, I learned the hard way that it doesn’t have to be true. My kids took to many other books before actually taking a shine to Enid Blyton and other authors like her. There is a time for everything and its best not to rush it. Let them go through the books they love but do keep encouraging them to try it.

3. Make bedtime stories a thing:

Reading a bedtime story is a beautiful memory that your children will carry for life. As they grow older you can take turns reading stories and get children to feel comfortable with it. Once they no longer fear books, the habit of reading would be easy to come by.

4. Children see, children do:

Children learn best by example. So if you’re serious about turning your kids into readers, get into the habit of reading yourself. It may not seem obvious but children get more influenced by you than anything else in the world.

5. Make reading a part of their daily routine:

Keep 15 minutes a day for reading only.  They can read anything they like, but it has to be done daily for a specific amount of time. A little discipline over time can turn into a hobby that they will thank you for.
